Speed and Performance

We performed our normal test for the speed of the VPN using 20Mbps broadband connection. The first test was done without VPN to set a benchmark on our next tests. The first speed test using speedtest.net gave a download speed of 16.81Mbps, upload speed of 2.09Mbps and 105ms ping. This is a standard result in the area.

CactusVPN Test 1

The nest speed test was made with the VPN client. We connected to the Netherlands server. The speed test result was great with 16.79Mbps download speed, 2.32Mbps upload speed and 109ms ping. As you can see, there was little difference in the speed.

CactusVPN Test 2

We also checked for DNS leaks. The result, we got from DNSLeakstest.com came out clean.

Customer Support

The support of CactusVPN can be obtained through their website or by contacting them. The website provides an easy to navigate and professional looking. All the setup guides are presented beautifully with graphics and logos of the device or operating system. Also, the FAQ area is good at answering basic questions.

CactusVPN Support Page

We had to contact their direct support for further questioning. They can be reached through sending a ticket. While we prefer phone support, their direct support responded to our questions in a helpful and timely manner. We asked them about encryption types, servers and many more. Once again, customer support was prompt and helpful.

Logs and Privacy

CactusVPN keeps no logs about the things you do on the internet or what you upload or download from various websites. However, they keep connection logs for 3 days for troubleshooting purpose. Though we highly prefer “no logs”, connection logs for 3 days is quite acceptable.

On the technical side, CactusVPN offers OpenVPN connections with 256-bit AES encryption with 2048-bit key authentication. They also have 256-bit SSL key encryption on SSTP, and L2TP/IPsec connections with 128-bit to 256-bit (selectable during manual setup) encryption.

The security they offer to their customer is acceptable and makes us very happy.

Conclusion

There are many things that we liked about this VPN provider. Its privacy policy is good and uses great encryption. The speed is very fast and clear from DNS leaks. It offers clear and well-presented guide for all its supported devices and operating systems.

Though you can connect to several servers, they only allow you to connect one device to each server. While this is not a problem in Europe, this might cause an issue in the US where you want to connect additional devices. Speed will be affected.

The only thing that CactusVPN needs to address is the lack of Bitcoin payment option, which offers total secrecy.

With all features examined, we are greatly satisfied with our experience. CactusVPN is highly recommended as an alternative VPN provider.
